John 2. 13 – 22

The same story appears in all four gospels and so is important.   John is laying it down in a particular way and not just as a factual record of truth.   Why has the story moved places (as opposed to the others)?   The Temple must have been full of people.   The vision of the Temple as tremendous completes the story of chapter 1 plus the wedding at Cana.   Cana shows both sides of Jesus.

Synopsis shows progression through Jesus’ life.   The Pharisees question John.   Baptism, Lamb of God, Nathaniel and Philip.   The wedding and water – the Bridegroom church.   This story of the Passover.   A synopsis of Jesus’ story in symbolism told in poetic language.   The word became flesh so after this John fills in

gaps and the final discourse.

Part of John’s overall plan – see Jerusalem Bible headings.

These headings are centred around Passover and Feasts in Jerusalem.   Used as chronology.   Festivals relate to salvation of Jewish people.

Story at beginning of Gospel shows Jesus’ authority.   Cf Mark 1. 22,27) written in retrospect.

Quote from Psalm 69.9.   How zealous are we for God’s house?

Changed attitude today.   Too competitive:  It hasn’t to be the best person - but the best a person can offer.

Passover  celebrating liberation, freedom, rescue from slavery.

But corruption in Temple.   Animals were sold at premium prices.   Traders were making money.

Why did the temple guard not stop Jesus?

It shows Jesus will do what’s right and not back down.

First upsetting a stall and challenging accepted order.

Moves into Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman as a different way of looking at things.

When we looked at John 2.5 “do whatever he tells you” Mary trusted and believed before she saw the transformation of the water into wine or the revelation/sign of who Jesus was.   Compared with John 2.23  where many believed because they saw the signs he was doing.

Cleansing Temple is not a SIGN but fits the profile.

The Jews = opposition/enemy already told Jesus is the Passover lamb.

This had a new meaning to the Passover

Tom Wright suggests John wants us to understand what Jesus did in Temple is a hint at the new meaning he is giving to the Passover. (Other Passover moments in c6 and from c12)

Jesus is the true temple – back to the word made flesh.

v.19 Jesus to raise it.

John was writing for people who do not sacrifice or have temples.

This is more than temple worship.

Today we must re-examine what we do.

It is as hard for us as it was for them.

We have to go out on a limb.   Be proactive

Question what we might be doing.

The protest Occupy. org camps – injustice.

The Upper House of Parliament amendment – the Bishops.

Olympic Games and the District Forum at the end of February.

We need to look for Jesus when we don’t expect him!

Do not be hasty to condemn.   Copy Nicodemus.
